Weekly WOWs #23

Jul 5, 2024 | 2 comments

Last week’s WOWs were a grab bag of happenings. I was always intrigued by the idea of a grab bag but almost always disappointed by its contents. Like the time I got a fake plastic watch. Seriously, what good is that? Anyway, here’s what happened to me that felt slightly notable.

I was stung by a wasp. I was in a super productive mood on Sunday and cleaned the cobwebs from around my front door. I decided to wipe down the glass, too, and that’s when I discovered I had squatters. A group of wasps had built a nest behind my wreath. When I bumped it, they swarmed me. One delightful lad, let’s call him Gordon, stung my arm. It could have been worse since I was standing on a ladder. Thankfully, I didn’t fall. But, oh man, Gordon, that hurt.

Florida Man gave me his two cents. Later that day, I got an email from a man in Florida who read one of my Fast Company articles that had been picked up by the Orlando Sentinel. He felt compelled to hunt down my email address and fire off a 360-word message, letting me know I had provided the worst advice ever and a recipe for being fired. The article discusses how and when new grads should set boundaries on their first job. I had interviewed Russell Glass, the CEO of Headspace, who shared that 40% of Gen Z workers report extreme stress every day, and 59% report feeling dread weekly. Russell gave advice on when to set soft and hard boundaries to protect your mental health. Florida Man, who works in the restaurant industry, thinks “young people today” are too soft. (Also, get off his lawn.)

I went to a secret bar. Finally, something positive! My sister and I visited Amendment XVIII, a hidden bar in downtown Franklin where you need to know the special signal to get in. We felt like Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole, making sure the coast was clear before pulling the lever. Inside, the club is reminiscent of a 1920s-style speakeasy. I ordered a fun craft cocktail called Second Hand Rose, which is tequila blanco, dark molasses rum, Aperol, lime, pineapple, ginger, and vanilla. Very swanky. I would tell you where it is, but then I’d have to kill you. (Just Google it.)

I had cornbread ice cream. And I loved it! Someone on a Nashville Foodies Facebook group shared a recommendation for Van Leeuwen ice cream, and someone else shared that they love a flavor called Buttermilk Berry Cornbread. I was feeling adventurous and picked up a pint at Kroger. O. M. G. It’s fantastic. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and tart and savory. It reminds me of my mom’s strawberry shortcake, that combined biscuit-style shortcake with juicy strawberries for the perfect contrast of flavors. I may have bought four more pints. And I may be doing a Kroger run later today to stock up.

How was your week? Anything WOW-y happen to you? Do tell!

That ice cream sounds amazing. I am going to try it.
As for the cocktail, I love a good tequila drink, but this one sounds like it had everything but the kitchen sink.

I thought the top of that drink looked like a wasp! Sounds delish, Steff. Love you! Oh, and Christopher has always looked like you…but you look better without the beard❤️
