This was a very full week of WOWs. Some I orchestrated myself and others I enjoyed as they unfolded in front of me.

I took a drawing class. The art museum in my city is hosting a Beatrix Potter exhibit. I was excited to discover that they were offering an art class for adults inspired by her drawings. I signed up and learned how to shade with colored pencils and create texture and light by combining colors. The experience has inspired me to add more art into my life.

I was reminded about the importance of resilience. When I entered the art museum, the first thing I saw was a mural that said, “The Power of Resilience.” This felt like a powerful message I needed to see as resilience is something I’m cultivating. The sign introduced a new exhibit at the museum that features work by more than 80 adult artists with disabilities, including textiles, photography, painting, mixed media, and more. 

I found our “big sister.” Several years ago, we purchased a metal sculpture of red roses at a craft fair in Michigan. When I arrived at the art museum, I was greeted by our piece’s “big sister.” Called “Rose on 65th Street,” the giant fiberglass and stainless steel sculpture of pink and red roses is by New York artist Will Ryman.

I participated in National Cinema Day. Sunday, August 27, was National Cinema Day. Who knew there was such a thing? Well, I did (only after I saw a Facebook post from my local newspaper.) My son who lives in Charlotte loves going to movies solo, so we decided to see the same movie, “Gran Turismo.” I loved its uplifting message. Plus, it was super fun to have a solo experience that was also a shared experience. 

I went on a wonder walk. Normally when I go for a walk, I listen to an uplifting podcast. This time, I decided to take in the sights and sounds of my city. Our quaint downtown is filled with shops and restaurants. As I walked around Main Street, I took time to notice the colors and shades of the potted plants and landscape. The Beatrix Potter drawing class opened my eyes—literally—to the subtle nuances that happen on a petal and leaf.
