I’d been feeling a little out of sorts. Do you ever feel that way? I’m in this in-between place. My old life no longer fits, but I don’t know what’s next. I went on a retreat in the mountains this past weekend and received so much clarity … and so many WOW! Moments.
I let myself feel my emotions. Being yourself and feeling yourself can be uncomfortable, especially in front of others. During the retreat, we did exercises that helped me tap into deep feelings, and I let them out. A good cry—the kind where you can’t catch your breath—can be so healing. It helps to have a cry buddy.

I connected with others. The retreat offered so many opportunities to learn other people’s stories. To hear about their challenges and triumphs. And to find ways to help, sometimes just by listening. There were so many hugs and so much laughter. One afternoon, we sat outside and passed around a guitar and sang. I felt so alive and inspired. One of my friends passed around a jar of affirmations. I opened mine, and it said, “I am never alone.” I felt that.

I ate vegan for four days! I’ve never been an adventurous eater. My parents once paid me to try shrimp. As I got older, my tastebuds expanded, but I’m still fairly picky. This is not an option when all that is available is what the retreat center offers. I tried—and loved—new foods. And felt the best I have in a long time. I’m continuing the way of eating (but I’m holding space for an occasional Chick-fil-A.)
I gained perspective. Sometimes, problems can feel large. The simple act of watching the sunrise, especially over a mountainside, can provide a sense of being part of something greater than yourself. I started the week feeling empty. I ended it deciding I am unwritten. I don’t know what the next chapter exactly looks like, but now I feel ready to start writing it.
Sometimes, WOW! Moments are finding a feather on the ground or seeing a single flower growing beside a sidewalk. Sometimes, WOW! Moments are discovering who you are. I’ll take both types. What were your WOW! Moments this week?
